In this engaging and relevant project students will learn self-advocacy skills while learning to see themselves as capable of making change in their own lives and the world around them.

Students will learn what it means to be a changemaker, identify a problem, envisioning a solution and create an action plan to make change happen on a personal or global scale. Students will create a product describing their plan using one of three multi-media options.

This activity would be a fun way to introduce the concept of self-advocacy or civic engagement. It is also a great addition to an American History unit focused on times of change or as a standalone life skills unit. In my own classroom, I used this project to accompany a unit on the Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s.

This presentation includes symbol supports from the Symbol Stix AAC image library to scaffold understanding for students with communication, language, social or adaptive challenges. These supports are also great for struggling readers and multi-lingual students.
